The Brazilian Healthcare System that is also known as the United Health System or SUS is made up of both the government institution and the private sector. Locals take pride in their healthcare system since SUS is probably the largest government-managed healthcare system in the world. Although it also struggles with some notable challenges, it is able to have massive coverage within its territory and is able to put up more clinics and treatment centers in comparison to any country that adopts the same system.

You will be glad to know that if you are an expat and you happen to face an emergency, the healthcare system in Brazil is mandated not to refuse treatment even to visitors. However, problems related to pre-existing conditions may not be covered and you are still advised to secure health insurance even before you land in Brazil.

If you are visiting and staying for more or less a year, it is advisable that you secure insurance to prepare you for any health emergencies during your stay. You may also check with your insurance agent back in your country if your coverage is able to extend in Brazil. Otherwise, you can also reach out to international healthcare insurance providers valid in Brazil such as Expatriate or Expats Sure.

Also, it's generally a good advice and often a much cheaper option to check what insurance packages are available in your own country and what coverage they offer in Brazil.
