Anywhere in Brazil, there is the presence of the police, but this doesn’t mean that you can be complacent with your trip. One can always benefit from knowing how to take care in a foreign land. Here are some tips in staying safe that may come in handy while you are residing in Brazil:

  • Take usual precautions and always mind your belongings when visiting any crowded areas such as public transportation vehicles, tourist spots, parks, and public dining areas.
  • Walking alone at night time is something you should never consider doing in Brazil. Should you be in a group, don’t risk going to dark areas most especially in the city center in Lapa and the beach. Don’t walk on areas that are far from the busyness of the main street and the presence of the public.
  • If you are to get home and it is almost late at night, better to ride a cab. Don’t wait on cabs in dark unlit areas and assistance in finding a ride when the area is totally empty of people.
  • In the unfortunate event that you got robbed, we advise that you don’t negotiate or fight back. Just hand over your possessions and report to the police immediately after the incident. Some thieves in Brazil will not hesitate to use weapons, so better protect yourself first.
  • Riding the waves in Rio can be really fun, most especially in Leme and Copacabana. However, be mindful of rip currents and waves that suddenly become bigger than expected. Always check with the lifeguards where the safe spots are.
  • When going to the beach, never forget your sunscreen and bottle of water. During summer the temperature may go as high as 50 degrees Celsius which can damage your skin or cause dehydration. Always check the weather when you are out for the beach and consider rescheduling should the weather be more than 38 degrees Celsius.
  • It is recommended that you avoid the favelas or the slums in the northern part of Brazil because they are being controlled by gangs that do trading of arms and drugs.
  • Avoid wearing expensive items because this may attract thieves. Always keep your valuables hidden and don’t carry too much cash.
  • When going for a visit to the ecological parks or any areas that have water reserves or trees, always carry an insect repellant. There have been reports of virus-carrying mosquitoes in Brazil and better protect yourself from these insects.
