Stay Safe in Germany

Germany is generally a safe country. In the 2019 Peace Index, the country was even ranked as 22nd most peaceful country  among the other 163 countries. Most accidents in Germany are only petty incidents and are rarely a fatal one. One can always benefit from knowing how to take care in a foreign land. Here are some tips in staying safe that may come in handy while you are residing in Germany:

  • Take usual precautions of always minding your belongings when visiting any crowded areas such as public transportation vehicles, tourist spots, parks, and public dining areas.
  • Be vigilant when visiting tourist spots. Crowded tourist sites are known to attract pickpockets and con artists where thieves may take advantage of your leisure walk while planning out to make an attack.
  • When walking in crowded spots, be aware of the “bumping” scheme where pickpockets try to divert your attention to get close and swipe your wallet away from you. Make sure your valuables are inside your bags or in places that would be difficult to access for thieves.
  • Try to avoid areas with buskers and beggars. While some beggars are harmless, the others will do anything to get cash from you, so better to keep your distance.
  • Be aware of people who try to sell you train or Bahn tickets that are at a lower price than usual. If you are a newcomer, you may not know if the tickets being sold were already validated and used already, so better take from ticketing machines only.
  • Disregard people who pretend to be train inspectors with a badge but are not in uniforms. They would usually take cash from you by telling you about an offense you did that you aren’t even aware of. Real train inspectors will give you the option of printing out a penalty notice that you can pay later.
  • ATM skimming scams are becoming common in Germany. When accessing an ATM make sure the card slot is intact and has no glue residue. Also check for any items around the ATM that can hide a camera to get your pin, like a folded brochure or an empty pack of cigarettes.
  • Avoid walking alone at night and in areas that are not well lit. Always keep your belongings intact and your bicycles locked.
  • Prostitution is a legal sight in Germany, better to avoid places where transactions related to this is being done.
