Housing in Italy

Renting in Italy is not so much of a great struggle. It is ideal for expats to rent apartments in the country or what they call ‘appartamenti in affitto’ which means ‘apartments to rent.’ Short term contracts may vary from a few  months to  18 months, while long term contracts go beyond 18 months to three or four-year contracts. If you are just visiting for a few days, you may want to check out transient homes that are available for rent on Airbnb.

For the ease of finding yourself a new home, you may already do your searches online. Chances are, you will be able to communicate directly to your future landlord or to a real estate agent who may be able to help you walk your documents and get you through your rental transaction. Below are the list of online housing portals you may want to use:

Renting an apartment in Italy is pretty straightforward. The condition of your apartment whether it is furnished or not is dependent on how long your contract will be. A contract that is less than 2 years, will be rented out to you as fully-furnished while a long-term contract of more than two years up to four years means you are to rent the property unfurnished.

Once you’ve already found a property to rent out, you may communicate with the landlord or the real estate agent in the online posting to schedule  a meet up for viewing. Once you’re sure to take the unit, you will just have to prepare photocopies of your identification documents and proof of financial capacity such as payslips or bank statements.
