Interview Tips in Italy

Like any other screening of applicants, the finale would always be the job interview. Although you may have not yet perfected speaking Italian, it is still helpful to bring some Italian greetings to the scene. However, you should be confident in speaking in pure English for it might be your only means to communicate to your interviewer. Take note that the previous section where you learned how to understand the Italian culture may also be very helpful in conversing with an Italian employer. Bring with you the following tips as well on the day of your interview:

Tip 1: Italians tend to give heavy initial impressions on the way a person dresses, make sure your attire  is formal enough for your interview. Men are expected to be in formal dark-colored suits over shirts that are plain in color. Males should also match their attire with a decent-looking tie, formal trousers and leather shoes. Females should either be in formal corporate dress that are dark in color or pantsuits. This should be matched with well-kept hair, light make-up, minimal accessories, and heels.

Tip 2: Although it was mentioned that Italians don’t take punctuality as a big issue, still arrive on time or minutes before your interview. Scan your documents and make sure you know what’s in it. Chances are, your CV has already been screened and you will be asked introductory questions based on the document you sent them.

Tip 3: Research about the company you are applying for and the job description of the position offered to you. You will be asked about your corporate background where you might have acquired the skills that will be helpful to the job offering. Be confident in answering and be straightforward in your explanation.

Tip 4: When asked about your skills, do not be too humble that you’ll miss out emphasizing abilities you can contribute to the company. At the same time, don’t be too arrogant that you’ll already sound like the perfect employee or someone too good to be true.

If you’re the employee they are looking for, the HR personnel shall reach you out the soonest possible time they are able. Although it is not an offense to follow up on the HR officer, make sure you just politely shoot an email if you think you should be hearing from them already.
