Stay Safe in Sweden
Sweden is considered one of the safest countries to live in. It landed on the 7th place in US News’ ‘The 10 Safest Countries in the World’ just last February 4, 2020. Although crime rates all over the country have always been very minimal for the longest time, with Stockholm known to have relatively crime-free neighborhoods, some tips can come in hand. Here are some of it:
- Try to avoid passing by Stockholm Central Station at night if you are uncomfortable congregating vagrants.
- Pickpockets are rare but may be present in tourist spots.
- Be familiar with Swedish banknotes. Although counterfeit banknotes and other forms of documents are very uncommon, it’s good to learn how to identify real ones. For example, newer 50, 100, 500, and 1000 Swedish notes have holograms and shiny foil strips.
- If involved in any conflict, try to leave even before the tension rises. And when in conflict with security personnel, be submissive for they are legally allowed to use some force when needed.
- If the roads are covered with ice, it’s better to seek help from the Rescue Service than to risk driving over thick snow. The organization will be more than happy to assist you.
- If you happen to pass by the rural areas, be mindful not to threaten some moose that tend to go around. This is to avoid provoking the animals to attack
- Just like in most European countries, when you’re driving, a seatbelt is always mandatory.
