Overview

On joining the European Chemicals Agency, you will work in a multicultural team with a leading group of experts. We implement the EU's groundbreaking chemicals legislation for the benefit of human health and the environment as well as for innovation and competitiveness. The Chemistry unit is responsible for the assessment of the substance identification information.

Details

The Chemistry unit provides advice on chemistry for all the Agency’s work processes under the REACH, CLP, Biocides, POP and PIC regulations. The Chemistry unit manages the following processes under REACH: inquiry, PPORD and chemical identifier adaptation.

Assignment

In this scientific traineeship you will have the unique opportunity to acquire expertise in REACH by taking on some of the operational responsibilities of ECHA’s Substance Identification team, such as:

  • Assessing the scientific information provided for substance identification in different types of dossiers
  • Contributing to the chemistry work on complex substances (UVCBs), or on specific groups of substances, for regulatory purposes
  • Participating in the activities of the Unit’s Scientific Expert Groups, concerning organic, inorganic and analytical chemistry
  • Contributing to the Unit’s scientific knowledge development and management, to support the substance identification work
  • Contributing to the drafting and to the quality check of documents related to substance identification

The work may include some other tasks, likely to be related to the assignment.

Description of Ideal Candidate

  • Completed university studies at least to bachelor’s degree level (chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering)
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Aptitude for teamwork
  • Good English skills both written and spoken are required (as this is the working language of the Agency).

Cost/funding for participants

  • The graduate trainee scheme offers a grant.
  • Trainees who continue to receive remuneration from their employer, or any other grant or allowance will only be entitled to a grant from ECHA if the amount they receive is less than the one indicated above. In this case, trainees will receive an amount equal to the difference between their income and the level of ECHA's grant.
  • Trainees in employment must provide a declaration of remuneration, expenses and allowances signed by their employer.
