Stay Safe in Taiwan

In comparison with other Asian countries, the crime index in Taiwan is relatively very low at only 9.53. This makes Taiwan a really safe country for both locals and foreigners. However, there are warnings that you should take note of most especially when going around less urbanized cities.  Take with you some practical tips below that you may be able to use during your stay.

  • Drug-related crimes are imposed with the maximum penalty. By any means, do not be involved, in trading, using, or trafficking illegal drugs for the punishment given by the country is death penalty.
  • Pollution is prevalent in most cities in the country. This was associated with the massive air pollution brought in from China, which is trapped in Taiwan due to mountains that surround cities. It is advised that you always bring with you face masks just in case you have to go to places that have sickening dust particles brought by the pollution.
  • The streets in Taiwan are generally safe even at night, but it is advised that you always bring company when going around in the evening.
  • Pickpockets are a common problem in tourist sites, crowded areas, and during festivals. Stay vigilant and place your valuables in bags that can’t be easily snatched or accessed.
  • It is a general tip for women anywhere else in the world for women to avoid taking cabs alone at night. However, if it isn’t avoidable, make sure a friend knows what taxi you are riding and where you are traveling. Always be alert and sober about the entire cab journey and never accept drinks from drivers.
  • If you’ve become a victim of a crime, never hesitate to reach out to the police around you or call the emergency hotline 110. Once you’ve reported the incident you’ve been in, report this as well to your government representative in Taipei.
  • The country’s beaches are sometimes a visiting place for some poisonous jellyfish. Always ready signs before hitting the beach and be mindful of coastguards around the area for immediate warnings. You may also want to swim near the shoreline because it can be more dangerous in some deeper parts of the beach.
  • Taiwan has been hit by some of the strongest typhoons and it remains in the areas where tropical cyclones pass by. Before booking a flight or a getaway somewhere in the mountains of the country, always check the weather forecast of the  location you are visiting.
